Description

...Is it that time again?  It feels like only a short while ago that I had uploaded my 2016 in Hindsight piece (which you can view if you click here: ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…) But now that I have found a proper name for things like this as well as a great template for it (found here: dustbunnythumper.deviantart.co…), it is indeed that time again!

Although I'm not sure if I have put up as much quantity in art compared with last year, I think the quality of the art overall has improved.  And I was fortunate enough that I had uploaded most of my favorite stuff at least once a month, so it's not as if I have to pick something exclusively because it was uploaded in that month.

So, without further ado, here are my top 12 picks for this year (as well as links to the original art for a better view of them).

January:
Blooper (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This was when I was fresh with the art tablet that I had received as a Christmas gift last year, and I still love using this tablet to draw.  I also happened to watch the plushie shenanigans that happened at Pacific Pony Con that happened between ToonKritic, Lightning Bliss, and Thespio (video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqdy5i…). During the shenanigans, Thespio's plushie ended up in the trash bin.  It was so funny and unscripted that I wanted to recreate that moment!  I especially loved the fact that Thespio's horn broke through this trash can. ^_^

February:
I Made It Through The Rain (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This piece is a recreation of the ending of Lightning Bliss's review of the Rainbow Brite reboot.  My heart ached for her to hear her cry like that, and it was super sweet of GoldenFox and ToonKritic to comfort her (especially considering that Twink doesn't like Toon).  It also reminded my of one of my favorite songs from one of my most favorite artists, "I Made It Through The Rain" by Barry Manilow.  In fact, I was listening to that song on repeat while drawing this.  I may not have gotten some of the colors right, but this still remains one of my most popular pieces in my dA gallery (if not THE most popular), as well as one of my personal favorites.

March:
Pringles for Pristine (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This is one of only two months for this year where I had to choose between two pieces during said month to be in here.  In this case, it was either my Two Become One vs. Brightcrest fanart, or this.  One of the reasons why I chose this is because today is a certain alicorn's birthday!~ (Happy Birthday, Pristine!~)  But another reason is because of the origin of this fanart.  It came about due to a comment that Pristine made on one of Blissy's videos, where she (Pristine) asked if she could have the can of Pringles that was sitting in the background.  Just something short and sweet!

April:
Two Worlds, One Family (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

Although this one might not look like much, this one will be very dear to my heart on a personal level.  When I was a young teenager, one of my favorite shows was Beast Wars (in fact, I have a DVD set of all three seasons!).  The CGI animation might look horrible compared to what we have today, but it was top-notch at the time.  Even if it wasn't, the characters and the overall story more than made up for it, and one of my favorites was Cheetor, voiced by Ian James Corlett.

It wasn't until about a year ago that I discovered that Mr. Corlett not only voiced the character of Silver Shill from the episode Leap of Faith, but is also the father of the voice actress Claire Corlett, who voiced my favorite CMC Sweetie Belle.  It was such a surprise to me that I decided to look around to see what kind of fanart revolved around this...only to discover, not all that much.  So I decided to draw one!

My excitement about this piece doubled when I found out that both of them were going to be attending BronyCon, the one convention I had planned for that year.  I was also pleasantly surprised that both of them were going to sit at the same autograph table (I was scared that the CMCs were all going to sit together, considering that it was the first time that all four CMC voice actresses were attending the same convention).  So, I was fortunate enough to have a copy of this piece seen and autographed by both of them!

May:
Water Games commission (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This one's special because it was my first commission that I had received (even if it was for points).  Even though the dA account is no longer active, I want everyone to know how grateful I was to the person who thought highly enough of my work to want to commission me.

So, the commissioner wanted a piece of our OCs playing in the water...which I knew was going to be challenging.  I decided to draw my inspiration from a moment in Fantasia, where the pegasus family was swimming on the water and had their wings folded up like swans.  It was one of my favorite moments from that movie.  Although I wasn't able to recreate that wing fold, I think the other details of this piece made up for that. My favorite has to be the water reflections; I really had to toy around with it to make it distorted enough to look like water but clear enough to show that it's a reflection.

June:
Thespio and Midnight Sonata (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This was another piece inspired by con vlogs, this one from BABScon.  Both Thepsio and Keychi had recorded moments when Midnight was being so adorable with Thespio; it actually reminded me a lot of my interactions with my former boyfriend.  (Yes, I did have a boyfriend; no, I don't have one currently; and no, I'm not currently looking for one.  Long story with no short version.)  Anyway, the adorable of those moments really spoke to me that I wanted to make this fanart as a gift for them.

July:
Teric is Best Swedish Chef! (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

Although based on a vlog from Nightmare Nights 2016, this hadn't come out until shortly before BronyCon 2017, mainly due to my forgetting that I wanted to draw one like this in the first place.  When I had heard that Teric Dragon was going, I suddenly remembered that vlog and this moment that I wanted to draw!  It was also the last piece that I made before attending BronyCon, and I was a little scared that he might not see it before the convention started.

August:
Ahem - Okay, okay... (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This had come about shortly after Bliss had revealed that she was going to limit how many commissions she was going to take due to her toll her previous workload had made on her health.  I wanted to draw something that would show my support for her, as well as reminding everyone that we need to take care of ourselves.  But I also wanted the piece to stay true to Blissy's character, so I thought that one of the few individuals who can get away with nagging at her is Dr. Wolf.  ^_^

September:
The Debt Discussion fanart (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

Strongly tempted as I was to hand over the title of September's best over to the Puny Vines comic (due to it being one of the first times my art was featured on someone else's channel and the dub was volunteered by Doc and Eli), I felt I had to give the honor to the fanart I made for Brawny Buck.  He had a lot of financial struggles with which I strongly related, and it broke my heart to hear his story.  On top of that, he had a livestream discussion with Dr. Wolf to talk about debt and some of the ways to deal with it.  I wanted to make a piece of fanart that would look like one of those conferences where guest speakers were standing behind a podium with their names on it and talking about what they were there to talk about.

October:
Eliyora Finds a Mosaic Slime (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

I was watching a livestream that Eliyora was recording on Twitch on a game called Monster Rancher, because it looked like the kind of game I'd be interested in.  (Haven't gotten it, though.)  Several pretty cool things happened during that stream, one of which was Eli's first discovery of a Mosaic Slime!  Since Twitch videos don't last long unless whoever makes them specifically saves them, I'll describe what had happened:

Eli had found some ruins with a dried-up fountain, along with a few statue that required certain plorts.  When she placed the plorts in the statues, it activated the fountain.  The water in that fountain seemed to work similarly to magic water that I vaguely remembered from when I watched my brother-in-law play Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker several years ago.  She took the water to a certain kind of plant, and the immediate area turned into an oasis, and the Mosaic Slimes began to appear.

And her first response was: "Whoa, hello!  What are you?!"  The way she cooed when she said that was very heartwarming, and I just had to draw this.  I struggled a bit with the rainbow-like effect of its body, but I think I did a decent enough job of it.

November:
The Ugly Truth (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

This was the cover art that I drew for a video that was originally going to be a Halloween special: me singing "Open Up Your Eyes" from the 2017 My Little Pony Movie.  While I admit that I'm not Academy Award winning material, I had put my heart into that song, and I wanted something with as much heart put into the cover art.  It was also a while since I had drawn anything relating with my OC, so I wanted something that would display her insecurities and inner doubts.  This was also one of the first time I was trying a lineless technique.

December:
I Can't Wait to Meet Him! (ripple-effect-mlp.deviantart.c…)

I had wanted to draw more of my OC's family, and they are ponysonas of my real family even though they are not Bronies themselves.  This piece depicted me, my sister Sonnet Delight, and her husband Valiant Charge, as we were eagerly anticipating the arrival of my first nephew, Hearth Warmer.  The lineless style here really pushed me to work on where I thought the shadows would fall, and while I am aware that this is far from perfect, it is another piece that is very dear to me for personal reasons.  I was also really glad to get more of my family's ponysonas out of my head.

Here's to 2018!
